Even if you have a social media manager, your social media process needs you in the equation.
This doesn’t mean you need to be the one managing it or performing all the tasks that go along with it. It’s completely ok to have a someone doing this, but you should be aware of all the ‘moving parts’ that make up your social media presence and marketing and sometimes that means being involved in it.
“I don’t want to do my own social media.”
“I don’t have time to do my own social media.”
“This is the reason I hired someone to do it for me!”
Sound familiar?
Here’s 3 reasons why it’s necessary:
- You need to be completely aware of how your content is being posted.
Review your content, edit it and make sure it makes sense. A second set of eyes never hurts to re-read it over before it’s posted online. Many simple mistakes can be caught this way. This includes the images that are being used for in your content!
Aside from mistakes, this is especially important for people who hire someone to generate the content for them! There may be posts that you feel are a little too focused on one topic or not enough of another. Or perhaps they may worded to be too edgy or opinionated. These kind of posts need to be toned down to a level you are comfortable with. After all nobody is going to think “Wow that person’s social media manager needs to be a little more subtle.” They are going to think “OMG I can’t believe Jane Smith said that!”
Your followers are not going to think or know about your social media manager doing your social media. Remember your posts are a reflection of you and your business!
- You need to know what’s being posted and when.
Is everything that pertains to your business being posted? Things like your blog posts, videos, images or memes, tips and/or tricks, lead magnets, products, services etc? It all has a place on your social media accounts and it should also follow a schedule so that you know what’s being posted. Using all of these different items also gives variety to the posts so you’re not sending out the same kinds of posts day after day.
The schedule may also have special days that you would like observed and if you’re not reviewing the monthly or weekly topics or themes, then how is anyone else to know? It is not only important to your business (depending on what you specialize in) but it’s as equally important to be personal online as well as marketing your business to your online connections. Showing our personal or human side goes a long way with showing that YOU are really there, despite the weekly tasks being done by someone else.
For example, International & National Dog Day are on August 26th. Perhaps you’re a dog owner and huge dog advocate and you want to share this to your followers.
Another example is March is Nutrition Month and if you’re a dietitian then you’ll want to showcase a variety of posts throughout the month regarding this topic that is related to your profession.
- You need to be a part of each social media account and the live networking because nobody can be YOU.
Tribe building, retweeting, sharing, liking or loving posts, clicking on, responding or commenting are all direct responses that cannot be done by anyone but YOU!
Think about it, would you want to interact with someone you’ve connected with online and whom you thought was that person, when all along it’s been someone else? Feels uncomfortable and like I’ve been duped or lied to.
Giving up the reigns on your social media presence and marketing is a huge risk and one I do not advise my clients of doing. After all, these accounts are yours and the online presence of you and your business. So, take some time to get aware and get involved!
